Oct/090
If you want to know how to build a home gym that burns fat, is cost effective, saves space, but has every piece of equipment that you need to develop and shape the body that you want, then check out this post.
I love working out at home. Don’t get me wrong I love the gym to, they both have their positives and the negatives (pros and cons), but I do love working out at home.
Pros of Having a Home Gym
1. One time cost.
2. Workout whenever you want.
3. Convenient.
4. Don’t have to fight for equipment.
5. Have all the equipment you want and need.
6. People aren’t checking you out if that makes you uncomfortable.
Cons of Having A Home Gym
1. More expensive up front cost.
2. Have to have self motivation.
3. No help for lifts unless you have a partner.
4. Have to have space.
5. No peer pressure. (Sometimes it’s a good thing.)
Those are the majors anyway.
How To Build A Home Gym
Determine your goals. This is the most important activity that you can do before you create your home gym.
Why?
This will determine what type of equipment that you need and will want. This isn’t a cookie cutter, one size fits all kind of deal. For instance: If you want to build lean muscle, then you will want to make sure that you have a squat rack and bench press or if you’re on a budget and want to build lean muscle, then you will want have adjustable dumbbells.
If you’re struggling with cellulite, then building lean muscle is the of the utmost importance. In order to get rid of cellulite you have to change your bodies composition from being fatty (Cause of Cellulite) to mostly lean muscle with a low, but healthy body fat percentage.
If you are looking for health benefits or cardio benefits of having a home gym, then you will want to add a treadmill, rowing machine, or stationary bike. If you have physical ailments that make certain moves harder, then you may want to have gym equipment that is easy on the body like an elliptical machine.
See how having different goals can change the way the gym is set up?
Example Home Gyms
A. Have money, space, and want it all. For building lean muscle you will want to have a adjustable squat rack, a bench press, and a lat pull machine (or ability to do chin ups). This three pieces of equipment will allow you to do a full body work out. You can essentially workout and build lean body mass (muscle) in your entire body with just these three pieces to your home gym. They are a must.
Next you will want to add a variety of dumbbells, consider adjustable dumbbells. Dumbbells can be used to target every muscle and can be used in any exercise. I like that the make each muscle work independently of another and makes the weak muscle groups catch up and pull their own weight.
Then you will want a treadmill and a indoor rowing machine. This is not only for cardiovascular benefits, but also for fast intense workouts. With both machines you get not only to exercise and condition different parts of the body, but you get to have change and avoid being bored.
Last, but not least, is the ab roller. I love this machine and is one of my faves. You can read my ab roller review here. This accompanied with other abdominal exercises that you can do on the floor or with weights is all you need to develop a six pack or flat belly..
I know you are probably thinking, there’s got to be more. This is it? Yup. I mean you can add other machines, but I apply the 80/20 rule to living and fitness. You will get 80% of your results (or more) from 20% of the machines and crap out there. With the machines that I listed above you can work the entire body and do more variations of exercises than you could ever imagine to do.
B. How To Build A Home Gym On A Budget. If you are on a budget and can’t afford the equipment above, then that’s ok, I will show you a less expensive way to get sexy and look great for less.
First you will want a good pair of adjustable dumbbells. With these your imagination is the limit. What ever body part you want to work, what exercise you want to do you can do it with adjustable dumbbells.
Next you will want to get a bench. Not the whole set up, just a bench by itself. This way you can do even more variations of upper and lower body work.
Then I would get a jump rope, ab roller, and then a very good pair of running shoes. This IS how to build a home gym.
Why?
With dumbbells, a bench, a jump rope, and some running shoes you can still do every exercises that you need to workout you entire body. You will also have to focus on cross training.
As you get some extra money I would add an some medicine balls, adjustable squat rack, and then a treadmill.
Most Important Lean Muscle Building Exercises
I wanted to give you some exercises that you should be focusing on to build lean muscle. You can use your imagination and do variations of these.
1. Bench press or push ups.
2. Lat pulls or chin ups. (these can be done on anything above your head that you can hold on to)
3. Squats. (with a barbell, dumbbells, or body weight)
4. Sprinting. (by far the best leg workout known to man)
Most Important Cardio Exercises
1. Interval running.
2. Interval swimming.
3. Interval biking.
4. Any workout with a rate of perceived exertion (RPE) of 4 or above (American College Of Sports Medicine 1-10 scale) that last at least 20 minutes.
Yes, probably a little different than what you expected to hear. Not your usual run for a long time and that’s it. That works, you will get benefits, but this is more up-to date with what really going on.
Interval workouts are simply workouts that you have short breaks. If you run hard for 2 minutes you may jog slow for 1 minute then repeat for 25 total minutes. The same goes for swimming or biking. It’s stringing together a series of more intense exercise with less intense active rest periods.
Long post I know, but I just wanted to make sure that I covered enough info to get you started.
